School history

Jamhuri High School began in the early 1900s as a nursery school for Indian children near Nairobi Railway Station, on what is now Haile Selassie Avenue, and was later known as the Railway Educational Centre. In 1928 it moved to its present site in Ngara, on Limuru Road.

In the 1950s it was renamed the Duke of Gloucester School, and it later added boarding. After independence it opened to students of all races and was renamed Jamhuri, Swahili for “republic”. Its motto is “Effort Unending”.
